2 Couple sought by Interpol over alleged ISIL ties caught in Turkey’s southA couple sought with an Interpol red notice over alleged links to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) was arrested in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on March 1, citing security sources. The man, identified only as Ismail S., carrying both German and Turkish passports, and his wife, identified only as Sarah O., carrying both German and Algerian passports, were rounded up by gendarmerie forces in the Akçakale district near the Syrian border after they illegally crossed into Turkey. Ismail S. was remanded in custody while his wife Sarah O. was deported to Germany with her three children, said the sources who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media. 516 Daesh-linked suspects detained in anti-terror operations in TurkeySecurity forces captured 16 Daesh suspects in operations against the terrorist group on Monday. Law enforcement officials in the southern province of Adana detained 47 suspects, including five women and 10 children, in simultaneous operations on 73 separate locations, the source said. The suspects were reportedly preparing for an attack with arms, Molotov cocktails, and improvised explosives following a call made by the PKK ahead of Nevruz on March 21 before they were apprehended by the police who carried out air-supported operations. 16Heads of football club in Turkey tried on terror propaganda chargesA Turkish court opened the prosecution on Friday of the present and former presidents of football club Amedspor, based in the biggest city in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast, on charges of making terrorist propaganda. Incumbent club President Nurullah Edemen and former President Ali Karakaş are being tried over evidence including tweets from Twitter account @AmedsporFK, which the two men said was an unofficial account not controlled by the club, the club’s official account being @Amedspor021. Among the offending tweets by the former account was one dedicating a tough away victory to “resisting guerrillas” and “the loyal people of Kurdistan”. Other evidence included music found inside the club building that prosecutors said applauded the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a group of Kurdish fighters that Turkey, the United States and European Union recognise as a terrorist organisation. 183 soldiers injured in PKK attack in SE TurkeyThree Turkish soldiers were injured in a PKK terror attack in southeastern province of Sirnak, according to security sources on Sunday. PKK terrorists targeted Hisarkapi military base area in Silopi district, near the Turkish-Iraqi border, with rocket launchers and long barreled weapons from northern Iraq, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media. 19PKK attacks in south-east Turkey after the fall of AfrinKurdistan Workers Party (PKK) launched attacks in Diyarbakır and Bitlis in south east Turkey on Monday, killing one soldier and two civilians, reports the Turkish press. The attacks took place right after in Syria Turkish forces and their Free Syrian Army (FSA) allies gained control of Afrin’s largest city from Kurdish forces yesterday. Yesterday the Democratic Autonomous Administration of Afrin Canton held a press conference and signaled a return to guerrilla tactics threatening to “inflict a blow to Turkish and Free Syrian Army (FSA) forces in their own base”. In Diyarbakır, a vehicle carrying military personnel on its route to Topçular police station was attacked. Specialist sergeant Sergen Çakmak and voluntary village guard Yasettin Opçin were killed. In Bitlis, villagers collecting firewood were targeted. One of the villagers, Nurullah Kılıçarslan was killed, while 4 others were injured. Turkey says the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its military wing, the People's Protection Units (YPG), which controlled Afrin, are an extension of the PKK, which has been fighting inside Turkey for more than 30 years. The 7th Penal Court of Peace in the capital Ankara remanded Ilhan K., accused of being a top member of the terrorist group in Ankara, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media. The suspect was arrested on March 20 by police counter-terrorism units at a Middle East Technical University facility in Ankara. 306 dead, 7 wounded in Siirt attackA Kurdistan Workers' Party (PPK) attack in Turkey’s Siirt province has left 6 guards dead and wounded 3 more guards and 4 soldiers, Turkish semi-official news agency AA reported on Friday. The clash happened when PKK guerrillas attacked forces providing security to a road construction project in a forested area in the east of Turkey. The wounded were taken to Siirt government hospital for treatment. Following the attack, an operation to apprehend the attackers was launched. The PKK has waged an armed insurgency in Turkey since 1984. Over 40,000, most of them Kurds, have died in the conflict. Source |
