İstanbul - BIA News Desk 20 August 2019, Writer and Columnist Ayşegül Tözeren Detained
Detained late in the night today (August 20), Tözeren was referred to Haseki Public Hospital for a medical examination. Afterwards, she was taken to the İstanbul Directorate of Security on Vatan Avaenue. Mustafa Söğütlü and Erdal Doğan, attorneys for the daily Evrensel, attempted to meet Tözeren at the security directorate; however, they were told that they could not see her as there was a 24-hour restriction order. Leaving the security directorate, the attorneys will meet the prosecutor and request that the restriction order be lifted. Daily Evrensel Editor-in-Chief Fatih Polat has announced the detention of Ayşegül Tözeren in a series of tweets:
Polat has informed that he talked to her mother, who told him, "There are several police officers in the house. They are taking Ayşegül into custody. They are not showing any reasons." "As a justification for the detention, the police only said, 'There is a report'", Polat has indicated further. (RT/SD)
