Police detained Abdullah Özyurt, a reporter for Zaman, shortly after the failed July 15, 2016 coup attempt during sweeps targeting journalists believed to be part of the religious movement led by Pennsylvania-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Turkey’s government accuses of having established a “parallel state structure” and for being behind the coup attempt. Özyurt was ordered arrested and placed in pre-trial detention on July 25, 2016.
