Based on the amendments, at least eight journalists and media workers who have been serving jail terms on terrorism-related charges were released from prison on 25 and 26 October 2019 upon motions for stay of execution and release filed by thier lawyers. Emre İper, Cumhuriyet daily’s accounting department employee, who returned to prison in April to serve the remainder of the 3-year, 1-month and 15-day sentence he was given as part of the Cumhuriyet trial, was released on 25 October 2019 after his lawyers appealed his sentence and filed for his release.
Five Cumhuriyet journalists to be release, Turkish court rulesTurkey’s highest appeals court ruled for the release of five jailed former workers from the secularist daily newspaper Cumhuriyet on Thursday. The Court of Cassation also ruled to change the charges against former Cumhuriyet journalist Ahmet Şık from aiding a terrorist organisation to creating propaganda for a terrorist organisation, Cumhuriyet reported. Journalists and executives from the critical daily were jailed this year after being convicted for allegedly supporting the Gülen religious movement, which Turkey’s Justice and Development Party government blames for a failed coup attempt in 2016. The court demanded a reversal of the sentences of Musa Kart, Güray Öz, Mustafa Kemal Güngör, Hakan Kara and Önder Çelik, five staff members who had received sentences of under five years. The court confirmed the sentence of another Cumhuriyet journalist, Emri İper. The release of the five jailed journalists is expected later on Thursday, Cumhuriyet reported.
