(11/321) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison It is learned from the news coverage of November 29, 2020 that, following the hunger strike of prisoners in Kocaeli Kandıra F Type Prison No 1, demanding an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, wards of prisoners including Çağlar Demirel, former Diyarbakır MP of HDP, were searched and defence notes, writings, books and notebooks of prisoners were seized.
It is claimed in the news coverage of November 26, 2020 that, in Kırıkkale F Type Prison a Covid-19 patient prisoner were put in a ward of non-infected prisoners. It is learned from the news coverage of November 26, 2020 that, in Osmaniye T Type Prison No 2, social, cultural and sports rights of prisoners were prevented; prisoners were not given face masks, gloves, cleaning supplies and disinfectants to be protected from Covid-19 pandemic; the wards were not disinfected; electricity bills that are paid by prisoners were too high; and the goods were sold at prison commissary at very high prices. (11/288) Person Subjected to Physical Violence of the Police in Izmir News reports on the case has covered statements of a witness of the incident, who shared the following: “He was in his grocery store on that day. And he went out to park his car. A group of police officers with motorbikes arrived and they wanted to make criminal record check. Şerif said, ‘I will park the car first, then you can do’. 6 police officers, took Şerif out of the car and started to beat him although he had done nothing. He was lying on the ground and they were spraying pepper gas on him and kicking him. People started to gather around, we tried to stop the violence of the police. But they committed violence to us too. A friend of mine was recording all of this with his phone, they took his phone and deleted the video. Then I recorded a short video covering a few minutes. (11/239) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison It is learned from the news coverage of November 21, 2020 that, in Denizli T Type Prison 30 people are kept in wards for 20 prisoners, and some prisoners have to sleep on the floors. It is learned from the news coverage of November 21, 2020 that, a colouring book and crayons sent for a one-year-old baby (A. H.) who is kept in Kocaeli Kandıra F Type Prison with her mother, were not given by prison administration on the grounds that “a baby cannot hold crayons”.
It is learned from the news coverage of November 15, 2020 that, in Aydın E Type Prison, the number of prisoners kept in wards is over capacity, necessary hygiene precautions for Covid-19 are not taken, and the meals given to prisoners are of poor quality and poor health.
It is learned from the news coverage of November 11, 2020 that, 4 prisoners including Kars city co-mayor Şevin Alaca who was suspended, were transferred from Kars Prison to Diyarbakır Women’s Prison (Şevin Alaca, Medya Tagay and Şengül Erkmen) and to Erzurum Oltu T Type Prison (Hazal Agdeva) under coercion.
Esmer Tunç stated the following: “We woke up for morning prayer at 5 a.m. The door rumbled while we were about to start prayers. The door was not being knocked, it was being broke. We went to the door, and saw that the police were at the door. We said, ‘wait we will open the door’. But they broke the door open (…) Güler lives at the second floor, they went to her home and broke her door too (…) I wanted to get in to get my grandchild Bêkes but the balcony, the yard and all of the neighbourhood was blocked by special operations police. (…) I reacted to this, and they pulled a gun towards my head as soon as I spoke. They said ‘shut up’ and pulled a gun to me. I did not stop talking and I said ‘I will not get into the house’. Then they pushed me harshly into the house. My grandchild was afraid, he came and held on me, I said ‘it is okay’. Then I wanted to go upstairs to see Güler. They said ‘go inside’ and pulled a gun towards me again.” Kudret Adıyaman stated the following: “We were sleeping when the police arrived. When I went to the door the police broke the door and the windows. They pulled a gun towards my head and said ‘lay down’. I did what they said. It is learned from the news coverage of November 8, 2020 that, 25 prisoners were kept in wards for 12 people in Afyon T Type Prison.
It is learned from the news coverage of November 5, 2020 that, 3 prisoners (Mehmet Can, İmam Buzi and Ömer Hayat) who were transferred from Kırşehir Prison to Konya Ereğli T Type Prison on October 16, 2020, were forced to strip search at the entrance of prison and they were put in solitary cells. It is also stated in the news reports that, another prisoner, Reşit Kodax was kept in a solitary cell for 2 years, he was subjected to physical violence of the wardens, and he was threatened by expressions like “nobody knows you, nobody is aware of you, nobody would know if we killed you”.
It is learned from the news coverage of November 3, 2020 that, prisoners in Adana Kürkçüler F Type Prison were subjected to verbal violence of the wardens, the meals given to them were not adequate and hygienic; social, cultural and sports rights were restricted and prisoners were not given books, newspapers and magazines. It is learned from the news coverage of November 3, 2020 that, 2 prisoners (Bünyamin Sürme and Erdal Polat) were put in solitary cells in Izmir Kırıklar F Type Prison No 1.
